My Northern Lights backyard quilt was inspired by this amazing quilt designed by Linda Gregor of Humboldt, Sk. She won the Viewers Choice Award for this creation at the 2018 Quilt Show. She has only been quilting for five years! When she enrolled at a beginner sampler quilt class at the local quilt shop, Haus of Stitches she's been hooked. Every quilt she makes has a purpose or is created of someone special. It gives her great satisfaction and excitement to make and gift these masterpieces.
The Northern Lights Quilt was a design from a quilt store in Fairbanks, Alaska called Northern Threads Inc. She saw the design posted on website and loved it and knew she wanted to make it for her daughter as a reminder of the time we spent in northern Manitoba. "The dramatic colours in this quilt captured the many Aurora Borealis we would savour for eight months of the year." The pattern itself is The No Measure Bargello by Cozy Quilts Designs. The fabric strips and background are batiks and were curated by Marie Noah of Northern Threads. Marie also designs and laser cuts the polar bear applique, which in itself was stunning. Linda free motion quilted the quilt myself using her Elna 740.
Linda Gregor loves quilting for many reasons. First because it's in her home which allows her to sit and quilt anytime during the day or night. This quiet focused work provides respite from a busy life which rejuvenates Linda. Second, quilting has elevated her creativity to another level as she loves to design quilts for family and friends with just the right color and texture of fabric . Linda comes to quilting with garment sewing experience that began as a teenager. With increasing expertise, she is able to gain relaxation and enjoyment in all parts of the quilting process. And finally, it has connected her to this quilting community and she has gained many friends through her quilting guild, Prairie Patchworkers Quilt Guild.
Thank you Linda for this interview. You are certainly a creative soul with other outlets like gardening and scrapbooking to express your ideas and inspiration to the world. I know I would not have met this vibrant, creative soul if I had not gone into this business! Her beautiful quilt is entrancing and magical just like our own spellbinding Northern Lights.
REMEMBER.... A QUILT MAKES EVERYTHING BETTER!
